Many people, uttering the word “America”, immediately recall hamburgers, girls in flag-colored swimsuits who are pictorial drink Coca-Cola from designer glass bottles and, of course, Tarantino films. Quentin has become a difficult one of the favorite directors of the Americans, he created his own cult style. Most of you have seen, or at least heard about them. This top directorial work will help you to replenish your playlist of the best films.
Summary of the rating:
The Quentin Tarantino Story
Quentin's mother, when she wore a child under her heart, was furiously delighted with William Faulkner, in one of whose novels there was a heroine with the name of Quentin. She decided that it doesn’t matter whether a son or daughter is born - she will call him that. So, it turned out: the boy who received this strange name received 37 awards, and was nominated for another 47. His life was not easy, and as he himself later noted: “I refused too many things in life for that to make a movie. I have no wife, no children. I made these sacrifices with a clearly defined goal. And I am happy. ”
Tarantino still writes all the scripts by hand, using only black and red pens to emphasize the storyboards and dialogues, so before starting to write the script, he worries that there are enough writing instruments to not buy them later. He also still uses the “Bad Motherfucker” wallet, which his hero had in the movie “Pulp Fiction”, believing that he is his personal talisman. Quentin also loves his mother, film effects, spaghetti westerns, unexpected endings, caricature cruelty, comics, cowboy charm and racism.
Someone can throw a stone at Quentin, saying that his films are absurd, the concentration of curses per square centimeter exceeds the maximum permissible limits for an ordinary listener. Mr. Tarantino builds skirmishes between the heroes so that each phrase in them can put the enemy on the shoulder blades, and the dialogs between the heroes convey the details of the relationship without unnecessary metaphors and are saturated with an atmosphere reminiscent of a Friday night in a small bar where a group of men who are simply without officialdom gathered and with a bold phrase discuss what happened in a week. This person knows exactly how to make films about tough guys who know how to kick their ass, besides decorating it with cool music. Ennio Morricone, White Stripes and Iggy Pop, Roy Orbison (with whom even David Gilmore from The Pink Floyd did not disdain to record a single single of his time!) - This is not all mastodons of lamp tracks that can be heard in the films of the famous director.
Top movies
There are three things by which “Tarantino” handwriting is recognized in films: frames from the trunk (something like a company signature), a cameo role of own performance (in particular, Quentin likes to play some kind of nervous neurotic in his films, which is 7 out of 10 cases they’ll kill before the denouement), and also loves beautiful legs. Tarantino is still that foot-player, and as you can see in his work, he loves to remove tender female feet and focus on them. Do not look for words to speak out about this man: nevertheless, his films tell more about the film director.
7. Jackie Brown
The film is based on the novel "Rum Punch" by Elmore Leonard, was nominated several times, and also received the "Silver Bear" for Best Actor.
When viewing, you will certainly think about why Tarantino chose this novel for the film adaptation. The answer should be found in the details of the novel itself: the main character, Jackie, works as a stewardess and helps smugglers transport cash for the sale of arms, alcohol, tobacco and explosives, and then steals part of the money, tempted by conversations with agents who try to force her to extradite the smugglers. It’s just the same explosive k-k-k-combo in the Tarantino style! Although it feels like the director was trying to be serious, you subtly notice the psychology of all dialogues between people connected by a business that is not so easy to get out of, as well as a liter of blood, murder, deception and theft.
Despite the whole action, you languish a little, because over time you stop believing in the heroes, and skepticism wakes up somewhere inside. Samuel L. Jackson, unfortunately, still can not stretch the whole film with his own glance and sarcasm. No matter how you try to have time to analyze previous plot twists, you’ll still get lost in what is happening in Jackie Brown. The film is really serious, but not for every viewer.
6. Inglourious Basterds
This film has eight Oscar nominations, and only one is nominated for Best Supporting Actor. By the way, the name of this film in English is spelled incorrectly. Tarantino noted that the name should be written exactly as "Inglourious Basterds", although it is correct to write "Inglorious bastards". Journalists questioned Tarantino for a long time and almost kept watch at his door with this question on his lips, until he broke and blurted out at one of the press conferences, “bastards” sound like “bastards”, that's why he called his film replenishing the history of cinema with a tape, to which the proverb “I speak and I write” applies in full. But you should not be prejudiced against the film: it tells a non-banal story of the resistance of American Jews in the midst of the activities of the German SS and a little about the then film production of propaganda films.
The Tarantino script mercilessly cut and modified, as he really wanted to write a military tape in order to take military heroism at face value. Needless to say, this is another characteristic feature of the director: to start a film, write scripts for a mini-series, shorten it, and then, in which case, plan the next film as a continuation of the previous universe, and rework it in the course of work.
Although the film tells us about the film industry of those times, the SS device also works in the genre of alternative history (in this film there is a funny Hitler who was eventually killed), and the picture on the screen along with the tube soundtrack pleases our already cracked heart, history is perceived very poppy. The escape of a little girl from death, who then decides to become a bloody avenger and avenge the whole regime that forced people to kill others, including her parents - I think most viewers are already turning back from the mainstream and marshmallow aftertaste of such plots. However, even such a thing, if it is seasoned with branded raisins in the form of a foot fetish and intense dialogues between “friends” and “strangers” about different things at the table, looks worthy. However, despite the fact that the Nazis were punished, and the work of the cameraman and decorators was impeccable, I do not want to review the film a second time.
5. Kill Bill
It's hard to believe that this original film has not yet been seen by anyone. Yakuza, heavy-duty katanas from Hattori Hanzo, revenge for the death of parents, killer children, life hacking for survival in a coffin, tearing out eyes, rehabilitation after a coma and the character of the “Bride”, which was specially invented for Uma Thurman - this is such a nuclear postmodern explosion, which will certainly undermine brains like Chernobyl. Uma Thurman, like a white angel, brandishes a rolled justice, not restraining the gloom to life, which suddenly deprived her of any hope for happiness. Tarantino thought up this film, flavoring it with details, like a caring hostess of sour cream borsch.
The film, like most of the director’s works, is intended for a wide audience, but some Japanese values are shown inside out. Therefore, the shah in response to Japanese-American relations still took place, and this film died out with its originality and left a powerful mark in culture. This is a great movie to watch at a friendly party, or to cheer up, but to call it the best in the history of cinema or in the works of Tarantino simply does not turn the tongue. Although I really want to revise it again sometimes.
4. Django Unchained
What to add: Tarantino is beautiful even when he makes films moving away from his traditional style and writes something new on the board next to his template techniques. This is exactly what happened with the movie Django Unchained, where Quentin finally decided to satisfy his long-standing desire and take off the spaghetti western on his own. True, this would not be Tarantino, if the picture did not have racism, phenomenally violent fights and a sea of blood, whipping just like a hose.
It is very surprising that over time, Tarantino began to pay special attention to outfits, so Django appears before us in a striking green frock coat and blue caftan (inspired by the painting “Boy in Blue” by Thomas Gainsborough). In this film, there is Leonardo DiCaprio, who at that time was still trying to win an Oscar with his game, so the moment when DiCaprio breaks a glass on the table was absolutely not planned, and the whole crew just froze from shock, and Leo played the whole the scene without even wincing in pain. Brünnhilde and her deprivations, the true experiences of Dr. Schultz and the dialogues, full of reflection on the nature of freedom and the injustice of the world affect. The director also decided to indulge even a little memes, and therefore his film ends with an epic explosion, against which Django walks with a confident and free gait.
Thanks to the fact that Quentin has already taught us that the bad guys get what they deserve (however, like the good guys), you are imbued with confidence in what is happening on the screen and you can’t but take on something from Dr. Schultz’s charm, or valor Django, I want to study in such films, and Tarantino - to applaud.
3. The disgusting figure eight
The great merit of this film and Tarantino, in particular, is that in this case he clearly knew what to choose for his particular plot. This film begins with simply gorgeous shooting according to all the rules of composition and color in the winter forests of Wyoming, where a prisoner is taken to be executed. Caught in the middle of a blizzard, travelers have to stop at Madame Minnie’s house, where the company from the Confederate, the Yankees, the sheriff, the Mexican, the thug and the cowboy begin to conduct their dialogues, and each has different goals. However, everyone should clearly understand who is telling the truth and who is lying, and this is the tension when your guesses fail in minutes, rivets you to the screen, as if hypnotized. What a unique Daisy Runaway game is, which is poured with blood and verbal mud every second, but it still continues to let its female eyes go and look sexy.
One has only to warn that the blood of the heroes in this film is too much, and sometimes this cruelty does affect some string in the soul. And remember that only Tarantino can always imagine blood with cherry jam or borsch - then the final scenes with blood fountains turn into gastronomic adventures. In this film, it’s nice to watch not only the picture in which camera work and frame construction “matured”, but also according to the logic of each of the characters who were played with love and skill. Quentin’s desire to make a product with a separate heart, to show it in all its glory, the rehabilitation of the format of a widescreen movie, which today began to pay attention again. That is why it is impossible not to give third place to this film, which divided many critics into two camps: some shouted that Tarantino had moved away from their standards, and others - that on the contrary, Quentin showed that there were still hidden talents in Tarantino.
2. Pulp Fiction
A non-linear plot, a large amount of drugs, the beautiful feet of Uma Thurman, a twist in a cafe to rock and roll, resuscitation with a syringe (by the way, the syringe was actually taken from Uma’s chest, and only then, when editing, this scene was “deployed” backwards) ), psychopathy, Tarantino in a secondary but noticeable role, bewildered by Travolta, and many references in films about cowboys. And all this under the name, which means literature, which in quality of execution is similar to toilet paper.
I am sure that most of you understand Tarantino as a daredevil who knows how to set up fights, conduct long dialogues and dramatically change the plot. In Pulp Fiction, he talks about the everyday life of American bandits, with all their pros and cons, and puts everything in such a way that you begin to clearly understand: the labels that we hang up are not always our objective assessment of personality. Among the hundreds of epic phrases with which this film is full, it is worth considering this lightness and naturalness of the emotions of the heroes, whom we perceive at first exclusively as negative.
It is worth watching Pulp Fiction already because in fact Uma Thurman, who was tall as a Eiffel Tower and wears the forty-first shoe size, was very shy of the frame in which she danced barefoot. Tarantino persuaded her to this frame for a very long time, persuading her that it would be very seductive and aesthetically pleasing. Everyone benefited from this: Uma overcame her complex about the fear of her legs, Tarantino clapped her hands with pleasure at the picture. Also, Mickey Rourke and Kurt Cobain and his wife were supposed to star in the film, but they refused, explaining this by employment in their projects.
1. Mad Dogs
It rarely happens that the very first serious work gets one of the highest ratings from critics. This is a huge advantage and a huge test, because all life passes in the pursuit of success.
Tarantino coped with this - he really is trying, improving his shooting style and screenwriting skills. Amazingly well-coordinated cast, narrative and fight with a sea of blood and an atmosphere of persecution. Tarantino drove everyone by the nose, telling tales that “reservoir dogs” were jargon, or that he had in mind the French “goodbye,” so far it is not clear what we, curious spectators, should stop at. Quentin invested a lot of energy in the film, it is impossible not to notice how he builds communication between heroes who wear “colored” nicknames, and that he allows one of the heroes to be saved, although he does not lose the realism of the whole situation, because the rest of the heroes are dying.
The beginning of work on the film began with pure luck, and it is difficult to understand how one could agree to shoot almost enthusiastically, using one's own costumes, but in order to play bandits who love their work and do it impeccably. When you start to realize, everything that happens on the screen takes on a new shape, and even a scene with a mockery of a policeman once raised whole groups of spectators in cinema halls and does not look so cruel. Tarantino is trying to imagine violence, which is the main means of achieving the goal for these "colored" gentlemen, as usual work.In addition, he clearly emphasizes that this gang is trying to “survive” rather than “humiliate” someone for the sake of purely emotional satisfaction.
There is a lot of understatement in this film that allows everyone to understand these simple guys who steal a million from the bank in completely different ways. They gather for coffee, shout at each other through the word, but it is this coherence that reigns in their team along with love for elaborate details and history that opens our eyes to what does not matter: what goal do you set for yourself, and by yourself you are ideally suited to achieve it. But you can choose the people with whom you will achieve this goal and gain invaluable experience.
And let Tarantino continue to shoot, while constantly improving, and gives us more than one shot of bloodshed, unexpected turns and fights.
